Planning an Exhibition: Displays from the History of the HAAS Gallery

Located on the second floor of the HAAS Center for the Arts is the HAAS Art Gallery. Created as a professional space for art exhibitions it has hosted many great shows over the years. Unseen work was required for these shows to be enjoyed by the public. From figuring out how to fill the schedule each year with interesting or important artworks. To sending the thank you letters after each show was over. This exhibit aims to showcase the planning process of a HAAS Gallery exhibition.
The exhibit pulls from over thirty shows in total to reflect different aspects of the planning process, including: Student art shows from the sixties and seventies which showcased a wide array of artworks. The 1970 “Landscape Painting in Pennsylvania” show in which artists from around the state were encouraged to share their paintings of Pennsylvania. A 1972 showcase of Alice Neel’s work, a portraiture artist renowned by many for her ability to capture truth from her subjects. “Stream of Ink” a 1987 traveling collection of prints made in Robert Blackborn’s workshop that hosts works by artists from many South American countries. The 1989 “Works on Paper” a National Juried art Competition which was held at the HAAS Gallery and many more.
The display is currently installed in the flat cases on the third floor of Andruss Library and contains photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, memos, press releases, and programs. The exhibit will be on display until October 13, 2023.
The exhibit provides biographical information on all of the individuals who have headed what is now Bloomsburg University since 1866. It also presents in-depth historical information on the growth the school has experienced since that time in terms of the number of students, programs, courses, and the physical size of the campus, all showing the remarkable progress from our days as a normal school to a teachers college and finally a full university.
The exhibit examines the history of the World War I memorial located near Carver Hall, and provides biographical information on the 16 students who are remembered there.
This exhibit remembers the summers during the 1970s that art students from Bloomsburg went to the wilds of Maine to paint, draw, learn their craft and experience life.
The exhibit documents the history of the wrestling program at the University from its founding in 1930 to the present day, featuring many of our individual and team champions from over the years.
An exhibit telling the story of the naval flight instructors who trained in Bloomsburg during World War II. The site also includes primary documents from the BSTC naval training programs collection.
150 Years of the Bloomsburg University Alumni Association
An exhibit documenting 150 years since the 1871 founding of an alumni association at the Bloomsburg State Normal School, with photographs and documents of significant events from over the years.
