Suggestions on how to find accurate information about current events

Welcome

This guide is intended to help you navigate finding information about current events, particularly about changes to the Department of Education.

First--Take Care of Yourself

Things are in flux. News is coming at you fast and furious.  Make sure you take time to take care of yourself.  Breathe. Stretch. Disengage from doomscrolling.  This is not meant to be preachy.  We as a university care about you.

Second--Understand the Context

The Trump administration is following a strategy known as "flooding the zone." This means it's issuing new policy directives and statements in a steady flood. This is a political strategy meant to overwhelm political opponents, who can't keep up.  Whether you agree or not with this strategy or what the administration is doing, the important thing is to know that if you're having trouble keeping up with breaking news, you're not alone.  That is actually the point.  More information here:

It's also important to understand how the government works, so you know where Trump's executive orders fit in and whether the administration can actually close the Department of Education, for example.  I know you didn't come here for a civics lesson, but bear with me. These are short and will put what's happening in context.

Third--Keep Up With What is Going on Now
