Library Instruction for Commonwealth University

The Commonwealth University Libraries’ Instruction Program increases students’ understanding of information, including determining information needs, accessing and evaluating information, and using information. The ultimate goal of the program is information fluency and supporting students’ retention and critical thinking skills. 

Types of Instruction

Formal classroom instruction 

This includes, but is not limited to:  

  • Programmatic information literacy 

  • Discipline-specific instruction 

  • General information literacy instruction 

  • Workshops 

  • Synchronous online classes using software like Zoom 

Instruction sessions are crafted to meet the needs of the instructor and where possible are tied to library learning outcomes. 

Individual instruction 

This includes, but is not limited to: 

  • Service desk interactions 

  • Research consultations 

  • Tours 

This can be one-on-one or in small groups.  

Asynchronous instruction 

This includes, but is not limited to:  

  • Asynchronous class recordings 

  • Tutorials 

  • Embedding in the learning management system 

Instruction Facilities

Instruction can be led:  

  • In the library classroom, 

  • In the regularly assigned campus classroom, 

  • In a campus computer lab, 

  • In a Zoom classroom, 

  • Or in another suitable location agreed upon between the librarian and instructor  

Curriculum

These areas include possible topics, which could span across the various tiers. All classes will meet the needs of the instructor and discipline.

Tier 2 

Introduction to the Discipline 

  • Subject specific resources, through the library and online outside of databases 

  • Advanced search tips 

  • Integrating sources 

  • Citation management tools  

  • Academic integrity 

Tier 3 

Senior Seminar/Capstone 

  • Synthesizing information  

  • Citation management tools 

  • Identifying specialized materials 

  • Presenting or publishing work 

Tier 4 

Graduate 

  • Developing original research strategies  

  • Advanced research tips for the discipline 

  • Citation management tools
