This guide is designed to enable you to conduct your research for your assignments in courses for Languages and Cultures and to find information for Study Abroad.

Find Sources

Features of Journal Articles:

  • Also known as peer-reviewed or academic articles, they are written by experts and/or highly trained professionals in a particular field.
  • The rigorous peer-review process ensures articles are vetted and fact-checked before publication.
  • Journal articles typically focus on a topic through a very narrow lens.

Find Journal Articles:

Features of Scholarly Books:

  • Due to the length, they typically cover a topic more broadly than journal articles.
  • They are typically written for a larger audience than journal articles.
  • They may contain a collection of related chapters by different authors.

Important Note: In most cases you'll only use a chapter or two for your research so don't be scared off by the length of a book.

Find Books:

Culture and Customs

To find books and ebooks on customs of individual countries, search the catalog for keywords culture and customs of or keywords culture shock or keywords food culture or passport your pocket guide to business, customs and etiquette.  If desired, add the name of a particular country to each set of keywords.

Cuisine

To locate recipes for specific countries or regions, search subjects under Cooking, [national or ethnic group] (examples: Cooking, French or Cooking, Chinese).  These headings may be further subdivided to designate regional styles (example: Cooking, Spanish - Andalusian style).  

Literature

Literature of other countries is found in the following classification ranges:

PG Russian, Slavic, Polish

PJ-PK Middle East, Indo-Iranian; Arabic Literatures

PL-PM Eastern Asian, African, Oceania, Indian; Chinese Literatures

PQ French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese Literatures

PT German, Dutch, and Scandinavian Literatures

Study Abroad

Travel guides to various countries and cities may be found by searching in the catalog by keywords for the name of the country or city and the word "guides," or for keywords Fodor's or Eyewitness travel or Rick Steves.  See also these three travel web sites:

To find books and ebooks on business and travel communication and customs. search the catalog for keywords global etiquette or do's taboos or taboos etiquette or passport pocket guide to business customs and etiquette.

  • Written by journalists and typically reviewed by one or more editors.
  • Can provide in the moment coverage of current events.
  • Written for a broad audience.

Search Everything is the library's equivalent to Google. In addition to searching everything in the Library's Catalog (books, ebooks, media, etc.) it also searches most of our databases containing journal articles and other electronic resources.
